Achilles Pain

Commonly called, Achilles Tendinopathy

This injury was previously known as Achilles Tendinitis; however as it is not a truly inflammatory condition it is now referred to as a Tendinopathy. It is characterised by tissue damage and pain in the Achilles tendon.

Achilles tendinopathy is when the Achilles tendon becomes injured, causing pain and sometimes swelling in the lower leg. The Achilles tendon is a strong band of fibres that connects two calf muscles in the leg to the heel bone. The most common cause of Achilles tendinopathy is over-use, worsened by overloading due to abnormal motion of the foot whilst walking or running. Tight calf muscles and poor footwear may also play a part.

What Happens During a Consultation

Your podiatrist will assess your gait, muscle and joint range of motion and footwear. Common treatments for Achilles tendinopathy include stretching, specialised exercises and most importantly DRY NEEDLING and massage. Orthotics are sometimes used to balance any abnormal mechanics which are placing strain on the area. Each of our podiatrists at Brindabella Podiatry are University trained and have a special interest in the mechanics of the foot and ankle.

Our appointments and orthotics can be claimed on the spot from your Health Fund and no referral is necessary. We can refer direct for X-Ray, Ultrasound or MRI if required.

If you are concerned about Achilles tendon or ankle pain, book a biomechanical assessment today.
