Corns & Callus

Early Intervention is Best

Corns and callus are areas of thickened skin that occur from abnormal pressure. The skin protects itself from pressure by getting thicker which creates a callus or a more localised corn. Corns are usually circular and deep and feel like a piece of glass or rock inside. If left too long, the skin underneath may ulcerate requiring urgent podiatry treatment and wound care.

It is particularly important for people with Diabetes to have their callus and corns treated in order to prevent ulcerations.

What Causes a Callus or Corn?

  • Footwear that is too tight or too loose
  • Toe deformities, such as hammer toes or bunions, increasing pressure from the shoes
  • Biomechanical or gait abnormalities that cause pressure under the bottom surface of the foot

What Happens During a Consultation

Corn removers and other chemical products from the chemist burn the corn but they also burn the good skin. We never recommend them. The podiatrists at Brindabella Podiatry will safely remove your corns and callus. This is generally a simple, pain free and comfortable procedure which we will do using sterile instruments during your appointment. Our podiatrists will also assess the cause of the pressure to help prevent the corns and callus from returning.

If you are suffering from a corn, callus or dry cracked skin, book a general podiatry assessment today.
